Work

I don't often blog about work-- just not something I do. However, there have been more rumors than usual from more trusted sources than usual that our parent company is thinking about selling our branch of the business.

Suddenly, toward the end of the day, we got a request for an all-hands meeting tomorrow from 3:30-4:30 pm. The all-hands meeting is hosting a senior level VP for the parent company, well above the two director-level people who most frequently cause all-hands meetings to be called.

The last division to be sold was sold part and parcel (all of the people were "sold" with the business and with a pretty good retention request from our company to the new one). My guess is that it would do that for our division as well. However, my feeling is that they will not sell us at this time unless a really great deal is given because we are working on a new feature for our main product that could, if successful, close to double our income from clients. Also, they have allowed us to hire a few new people and get new hardware that we were in need of (servers, backup devices, etc.).

Then again, I've been having a harder time ignoring the rumors and have had some dreams about our division being sold to one company in particular. I've been under a lot more stress than usual lately, due to this work issue, the church wedding plans, immigration issues, etc., and have been chalking the dreams about all of these events up to just trying to deal with the stress.

Can't help but wonder where the few people like me, who work for more than one division directly, might be affected if they do sell our division. Would I be given a choice of where I can go?

  1. Suddenly, our department received a Cancel Meeting email for this meeting and no reschedule. And, apparently, there is an hour-long managers-only meeting after this meeting.

    Wonder why we suddenly got canceled?

  2. Apparently they have made the "all-hands" meeting into a "most-hands" meeting. Prod Docs and a few other people/groups have suddenly been dropped from the meeting and don't get to meet the VP or be involved in the meeting.

    I guess this is a good sign for my continued employment, at least. ;-)

  3. What amuses me is the mindset that changing something--everything--is going to make it better. Nope: it is just going to change the status quo, and sometimes it works out and sometimes it's worse than what was being done.

    Young people are notorious for coming into a scene, sizing it up quickly, and deciding that much of what is in place has to change: it'll be so much better. Perhaps.

    I've learned, and it's taken many years, to spend some time with what is before deciding what needs to be. Make the changes one at a time, see how that works, and then move on to the next area that can benefit from doing it differently.

    This is especially true in personnel. Take time to know which employees are key based on their performance, not their personality, and rid the situation of those employees who are all talk and no action.

    Don't be fooled by what you think you see, but base decisions on what you know.

    I'm hope the new changes at your work site are positive and improve both working conditions and employee production.

  4. I spoke with Bang and Vu about it, and they said it was primarily just a meet n' greet with the man. He tried to extol the virtues of the branch and the philosophies of the company and answer questions. No word on sale of the division or anything like that.
